The Man With A Low Sperm Count Oligospermia : Cause & Treatment
The diagnosis and treatment of oligospermia or low sperm count is not straight forward. Most men are not keen on semen testing in the first place, and a diagnosis of low sperm count puts extra pressure on him. Since there is no guaranteed treatment to remedy this condition, it is preferable to try alternative solutions like such as IVF and ICSI.
Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia)
The most common reason for infertility in men is low sperm count. Diagnosis and treatment of this condition is often indirect.
Azoospermia
Azoospermia is the name given to the condition in which there are no sperm in the semen. The semen may look normal, but the condition shows up under a microscope.
Varicocele
One of the possible reasons for a low sperm count is a varicocele, which is a swollen varicose vein in the scrotum - usually on the left side. The reason for infertility associated with a varicocele is unclear. It may also have a progressively damaging effect on sperm production, so that the sperm count may decline with time.
The Man With Poor Sperm Motility Asthenospermia : Cause & Treatment
While the commonest cause of male infertility is a low sperm count, some men are infertile because of poor sperm motility. Sperm motility is the ability to move. This condition is called asthenospermiaor asthenozoospermia. Often, the two often co-exist, and this is called oligoasthenospermia. Sperm motility can only be assessed when a semen analysis is performed in the laboratory.
The Man With Abnormal Sperm Morphology Teratozoospermia : Cause & Treatment
Some men are infertile because of abnormal looking sperm. This is called teratozoospermia. This is diagnosed by examining the semen under a microscope to ascertain the sperm shape. A normal sample should have at least 15% normal forms.
Anovulation
Anovulation means \'not ovulating\', and is one of the common reasons of infertility. Women who fail to ovulate or who have abnormal ovulation usually have a disturbance of their menstrual pattern - either a complete lack of periods (amenorrhoea), irregular or delayed periods (oligomenorrhoea) or occasionally a shortened cycle. It can be treated successfully by a variety of treatments like clomiphene citrate, human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), bromocriptine, GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) and GnRH analogue.
Polycystic Ovarian Disease - PCOD
Polycystic ovarian syndrome ( PCOS), also known as PCOD ( polycystic ovarian disease) is one of the commonest causes of infertility. Patients have multiple small cysts in their ovaries that occur when the regular changes of a normal menstrual cycle are disrupted. The ovary is enlarged; and it produces excessive amounts of androgen and estrogenic hormones. This condition is also called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or the Stein-Leventhal Syndrome.
Endometriosis : Symptoms, Diagnosis & Medication
Endometriosis , commonly called \'endo\', occurs when normal tissue lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue may implant itself and grow anywhere within the abdominal cavity. It is labeled a \'career woman\'s disease\' since it is more likely to be found in delayed pregnancy.
Tubal Infertility
The likelihood of surgical success of tubal surgery in terms of pregnancy, depends on the severity of the tubal damage. Since the results of surgery have not been encouraging, nowadays, many patients are advised to undergo IVF (in vitro fertilization) as their first treatment option instead of surgery.
Fibroids And Infertility
The relationship between fibroids and infertility is still a controversial topic. In fact, most fibroids in infertile women do not need any treatment at all, since they do not affect fertility or pregnancy. Unnecessary surgery can actually reduce your fertility, because it causes adhesions and scarring which can damage the tubes. They are diagnosed through ultrasound examination as well as a few additional tests.
Ovarian Cysts And Infertility
Ovarian cysts are commonly found in young women, and are often detected on routine ultrasound scans. Since they are also found in infertile women, they cause considerable anxiety. Diagnosis of ovarian cysts is done through a ultrasound scan.
TB ( Tuberculosis ) And Infertility
TB cause infertility only when it infects the genital tract (Genital TB). Sometimes latent bacilli that is left over from infections that the body successfully fights off can get reactivated, and then spread through the blood stream. It is only when it lodges and infects the genital tract, that TB can cause infertility. In the man it causes tuberculous epididymo-orchitis, blocking the passage, as a result of which the man becomes azoospermic ( no sperm enter the semen because the tract is blocked). In the woman, it causes tuberculous endomteritis (infection of the uterus) and salpingitis (infection of the tubes). This infection can often be silent, and may not cause any symptoms or signs at all!
Recurrent Miscarriage - Causes, Symptoms & Signs
One of the most frustrating situations in Infertility Treatment is recurring abortions. These are women who conceive but cannot carry a pregnancy to term - women who have repeated miscarriages. Since it is not fully understood yet, it raises a lot of questions that do not have the answers.
Information On Miscarriages - The Double Whammy
Miscarriages are extremely common and occur in about 10% of all pregnancies. And a miscarriage after infertility treatment is harder to come to terms with. The silver lining is that women who have had at least one miscarriage have a better prognosis for having a healthy baby as compared to someone who has never been pregnant.
Infertility Because Of Sexual Problems
One of the common reasons for infertility is sexual dysfunction. Sexual failure is often covered in secrecy and guilt, until the subject of children arises. There are many solutions, including self help kits.
Anejaculation : When A Man Cannot Ejaculate
Anejaculation is the inability to ejaculate semen despite stimulation of the penis by intercourse or masturbation. It is a fairly common problem, and is often confused with erectile dysfunction.
Vaginismus And Infertility
The condition which affects a woman\'s ability to have sexual intercourse is called vaginismus. This is due to a conditioned muscle reflex in the lower pelvic muscle called the PC (pubococcygeus) muscle, which clamps shut, making penetration either extremely painful or in many cases, impossible.
FSH Level -High FSH Levels & Poor Ovarian Response - FSH Level
Pregnancy rates in IVF are directly dependent upon the quality and number of embryos transferred, and the more the eggs a woman grows, the better the embryos we can select from. This is why women with a good ovarian response have much higher pregnancy rates than women with a poor ovarian response. Poor ovarian response is also known as poor ovarian function, poor ovarian reserve, occult ovarian failure, or the Oopause. Various tests have been described to measure ovarian reserve, the commonest of them measures the FSH Level.
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)
The most worrisome complication of IVF is that of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), because of superovulation. Many women going through IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment will have mild degrees of ovarian hyperstimulation with a little bit of lower abdominal swelling, discomfort, and dizziness. This does not require hospitalization, just bed rest at home.
