Egg freezing by vitrification - stop your biological clock and preserve your fertility !

What is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process that allows women to preserve their eggs for future use. This can be a valuable option for women who want to delay childbearing but want to have the option of getting pregnant later in life.

Who is Egg Freezing For?

Egg freezing can be beneficial for a variety of women, including:

  • Women who want to delay childbearing due to career goals or other personal reasons.
  • Women facing medical treatments that could impact fertility, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
  • Women with a family history of early menopause who want to preserve their fertility options.
  • Women who want to explore options for using donor sperm in the future.

Advantages of Egg Freezing

There are several advantages to egg freezing:

  • Preserves Fertility: Egg freezing allows women to preserve their fertility at a younger age, when their eggs are generally healthier and have a higher chance of resulting in a successful pregnancy.
  • Provides Options: Egg freezing empowers women to take control of their reproductive timeline and make choices about childbearing on their own terms.
  • Reduces Stress: Knowing that they have frozen eggs can help alleviate anxiety about declining fertility for women who want to delay childbearing.
Traditional Freezing Challenges

In the past, freezing eggs posed a significant challenge. Eggs are the largest cells in the body and contain a large amount of water. Traditional slow-freezing techniques caused this water to form ice crystals during freezing, which damaged the eggs.

Vitrification: A Breakthrough in Egg Freezing

Thankfully, a new technique called vitrification has revolutionized egg freezing. Vitrification, meaning "glass" in Latin, involves ultra-rapid freezing. Eggs are placed in tiny droplets of a special solution and then plunged directly into liquid nitrogen. This rapid freezing process cools the eggs from body temperature (37°C) to -196°C in just seconds, preventing ice crystals from forming.

Benefits of Egg Freezing at Malpani Infertility Clinic

Malpani Infertility Clinic utilizes vitrification to offer several advantages for egg freezing:

  • Reliable Egg Preservation: Vitrification allows us to freeze eggs with high success rates, resulting in pregnancy rates comparable to using fresh eggs.
  • Donor Egg Banks: We can create frozen egg banks to facilitate and reduce the cost of egg donation. These frozen eggs can be shipped anywhere globally. However, it's crucial that the receiving clinic has the necessary expertise in vitrification for proper thawing.
  • Postponing Childbearing: Egg freezing empowers women to focus on their careers or other goals while preserving their fertility for future childbearing.
The Egg Freezing Process at Malpani Infertility Clinic

Our egg freezing treatment protocol typically follows these steps:

  1. Downregulation (Day 1): Your cycle begins on Day 1, marked by the start of bleeding. We start downregulation using a daily injection of Lupride, a GnRH analog medication.
  2. Baseline Ultrasound (Day 3): An ultrasound scan is performed on Day 3 to confirm the absence of any ovarian cysts.
  3. Ovulation Stimulation (Day 3): If no cysts are present, we begin superovulation using daily injections of Menogon (HMG). The dosage is determined by your ovarian morphology and antral follicle count.
  4. Follicle Monitoring (Day 10 Onwards): Starting on Day 10, we perform regular ultrasound scans to monitor the growth of your follicles. You will need to be in Mumbai for approximately 10 days during this phase. All treatment is provided within our clinic for your convenience.

  • Day 1: Begin downregulation with Lupride injection (0.2 ml subcutaneous)
  • Day 2: Lupride injection (0.2 ml subcutaneous)
  • Day 3: Lupride injection (0.2 ml subcutaneous) and vaginal ultrasound scan. If no cysts are detected, superovulation with Menogon injections begins. If a cyst is found, it can be aspirated under ultrasound guidance, and treatment continues.
  • Day 4-9: Daily injections of Lupride (0.2 ml subcutaneous) and Menogon (75 IU, 4 ampoules intramuscular)
  • Day 10: Lupride injection (0.2 ml subcutaneous), Menogon injection (75 IU, 4 ampoules intramuscular), and vaginal ultrasound scan to monitor follicle growth. Daily injections and scans will continue until follicles mature (usually Day 14-16).
  • Day 14-16 (approx.): Once follicles reach maturity, an HCG injection is administered, followed by egg retrieval 36 hours later.
  • Day 17 (approx.): The retrieved eggs are vitrified for preservation.
  • Day 20 (approx.): You can travel home after three days of recovery from egg collection.
Frequently Asked Questions about Egg Freezing
How does egg freezing work?
  • Egg freezing involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, retrieving the eggs through a minimally invasive procedure, and then freezing them using a rapid freezing technique called vitrification.
What is the success rate of egg freezing?
  • The success rate of egg freezing depends on several factors, including the woman's age at the time of freezing and the number of eggs retrieved. However, advancements in vitrification technology have significantly improved success rates.
What are the side effects of egg freezing?
  • Egg freezing typically involves the use of hormonal medications to stimulate ovulation. These medications may cause some mild side effects such as bloating, mood swings, and headaches. The egg retrieval procedure itself is minimally invasive and typically well-tolerated.
How long can eggs be frozen?
  • Eggs frozen using vitrification can be stored indefinitely without significant risk of damage.
How much does egg freezing cost?
  • The cost of egg freezing can vary depending on the clinic and location. However, it typically includes the cost of medications, monitoring scans, the egg retrieval procedure, and storage fees.
Is egg freezing right for me?
  • If you are considering egg freezing, it is important to consult with a fertility specialist to discuss your individual circumstances and determine if this is the right option for you.
