Egg Freezing Truths: What Doctors Don’t Tell You

Patient: Dr Malpani, I just read this article about a celebrity who had twins after freezing her eggs at 41. That’s amazing! It makes me think maybe I don’t need to rush into motherhood. I can always freeze my eggs later, right?

Dr Malpani: I understand why that sounds reassuring, but it’s misleading. These stories make it seem like doctors can perform magic and override biology. Sadly, the truth is—age still matters, and egg freezing is not a guarantee.

Patient: But if this celebrity did it, doesn’t it prove it’s possible?

Dr Malpani: It’s possible, yes—but very unlikely. Freezing eggs at 41 has an extremely low success rate. Even if eggs are collected, many won’t fertilise, and very few will develop into healthy embryos. Expecting twins from frozen eggs at that age is highly improbable.

Patient: That’s disappointing. Doesn’t IVF fix this problem?

Dr Malpani: IVF can help, but it can’t undo biology. After 38, ovarian reserve drops steeply, and after 40, the success rate with your own eggs is under 5% per cycle. Even when embryos form, many carry genetic abnormalities, so the live birth rate is even lower.

Patient: Then how do older women still get pregnant through IVF?

Dr Malpani: The real reason is donor eggs. Since they come from younger women, the chances of success are much higher. But here’s the catch—sometimes patients claim they got pregnant with their own frozen eggs when in fact donor eggs were used. That’s not something clinics highlight openly.

Patient: That feels misleading. So when is the best time to freeze eggs?

Dr Malpani: Before 35. Eggs are healthier then, giving you the best chance of a baby later. Freezing after 40 is almost futile, though some clinics still promote it because it attracts patients.

Patient: So those articles are really just giving false hope?

Dr Malpani: Exactly. They sell a dream but hide the bitter truth. While clinics may benefit from more referrals, patients pay the price in disappointment. The biological clock is real, and women deserve to hear the truth—clearly and compassionately.
