Understanding the Maximum Age Limit for IVF in India: A Conversation with Dr. Malpani

Patient: Dr. Malpani, I’ve heard different things about the age limit for IVF in India. Can you help clarify it for me?

Dr. Malpani: Of course. The rules regarding the maximum age limit for IVF have changed significantly over the years. There was a time when there wasn't any age limit, allowing us to treat any couple who came to us.

Patient: Really? So, what happened?

Dr. Malpani: Yes, it was quite flexible. Responsible doctors would educate and counsel patients about the increased medical risks for older individuals. We understood that not every 55-year-old is the same in terms of health and fitness.

Patient: That sounds reasonable. Why did it change?

Dr. Malpani: Unfortunately, some doctors abuse this flexibility. There were extreme cases where embryos were implanted in women over 70 years old. These cases were often publicised with sensational headlines, showing pregnancies in very elderly women as remarkable achievements, even though these often involved donor eggs.

Patient: That sounds problematic. How did the authorities respond?

Dr. Malpani: To address these issues and prevent malpractice, the Indian government enacted the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) law. This law prohibits IVF treatment for women over 50 and men over 55.

Patient: I see. But what about women who are just over the age limit but are in good health and wish to conceive?

Dr. Malpani: It’s indeed a challenge. While the law aims to protect patient welfare and standardise practices, it can be restrictive for healthy women just over the age limit who wish to conceive.

Patient: So, this law was necessary because of the previous abuses?

Dr. Malpani: Exactly. Although the law is restrictive, it was a necessary measure due to the absence of regulations and the misuse of the previous flexibility. Consequently, all doctors and patients must now adhere to these age limitations for IVF treatment in India.

Patient: Thank you, Dr. Malpani, for explaining this so clearly. It’s good to understand the reasons behind these regulations.

Dr. Malpani: You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help clarify it for you. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
