Since IVF basically allows us to bypass the fallopian tubes, its obvious that its going to be helpful for treating patients with tubal factor infertility those whose tubes are blocked or damaged .

However, its become invaluable for treating a much wider range of indications, and in fact it has become the treatment of last resort for all infertile couples , no matter what their diagnosis is.

While IVF was first developed for those patients without functional fallopian tubes , it can be used for treating any couple , no matter what the cause of their infertility is.

Thus, if a man has a low sperm count , or a zero sperm count , we can use it to do ICSI, which allows us to fertilise one single egg with a single sperm. This allows us to make an embryo in the lab, which would never have been created in the fallopian tube !

Also, IVF allows us to check the embryo quality before transfer. Transferring the best embryos allows us to increase the chances of achieving a pregnancy quickly, rather than have to be limited by natures inefficiency.

Being able to handle embryos in vitro in the lab gives us a lot more versatility , so that we can optimise success rates, and that's a huge advantage.
