Ovulation Prediction Test (Home) Kit in India | How does the test work ?

Ovulation is the central event in the menstrual cycle. Since the egg remains alive for only 24 hours, being able to pinpoint when ovulation occurs ( "the fertile time" ) is critically important for infertile couples.

Ovulation prediction test kits (OPK) are a very useful scientific tool for helping women to pinpoint ovulation. These kits detect LH which is produced in large quantities shortly before ovulation and can be found in the urine. Once the LH surge has occurred, ovulation usually takes place within 12 to 44 hours. Urine testing is started about two days prior to the expected day of ovulation and continues until the test becomes positive. The urine should be collected at the same time every day - and testing the first-morning urine sample is a good idea.

If you aren't comfortable using these OPK kits, you can use the Malpani ClinicOnline Fertility Calculator to determine your peak fertility dates. The major advantage of the Calculator is that it's free, and you don't need to pee on a stick or buy the OPK kits !

  • The calculator allows you to set upFREE EMAIL REMINDERS as well. The Calculator calculates your most fertile days based on the fact that:
    1. Ovulation occurs 14 days before the next menstrual period is due.
    2. Fertility peaks on the day of ovulation and for 4 days prior to this.

This free calculator can also help you to make more intelligent use of your OPK tests, because it can help guide you when to do the tests. For example, if your cycle ranges between 27 and 34 days, you could possibly ovulate between days 13 and 20. Therefore, testing should begin on day 11 and continue until ovulation is indicated or through day 20. There is an 80 percent chance of detecting ovulation with five days of testing and a 95 percent chance with ten days of testing. Occasionally, ovulation may not occur in a particular cycle. If the ovulation prediction test has been timed and performed accurately and has not turned positive, you should discontinue testing and begin again with your next menstrual cycle. The persistent failure of the test to turn positive may indicate a problem with regard to ovulation.

Once a test has registered positive, indicating that ovulation is about to take place and that your fertile time has started, please stop testing! It is no longer necessary to do any more testing in that cycle. The remaining tests in a kit may be saved and used in the following menstrual cycle if pregnancy does not occur.

Ovulation prediction kits offer the advantage that they allow you to predict when ovulation will occur - thus maximizing the chances that intercourse will be timed at your most fertile period. They can also be done in the privacy of your own home.

The Home Ovulation Test can help you plan baby-making sex with your partner during your peak fertile time, in order to maximize your chances of conceiving. In each cycle, the level of luteinizing hormone (LH) surges, causing ovulation to occur 24-36 hours later. The Test kit allows you to detect this LH surge in your urine and therefore tells you the 2 days when you have the best chance of conceiving. The Ovulation Test is:

  • 99% accurate in laboratory tests
  • Uses cassettes rather than strips
  • As easy to use as a pregnancy test
  • Fast - results in just 3 minutes
  • Convenient

The LH (Luteinizing Hormone) which is in the urine of normal women will increase dramatically in the middle of the menstrual cycle. The LH increase triggers ovulation which is when the egg is released periodically from Normal fertile women. WHO experts state that LH testing is a reliable way to detect ovulation. Ovulation will occur after 24-48 hours following a positive test.

When the specimen of urine is dropped into a cassette, capillary action carries the specimen to migrate along the membrane. When LH in the specimen reaches the Test Zone region of the membrane, it will form a colored line. The absence of this colored line suggests a negative result.

To serve as a procedure control, a colored line will appear at the Control Zone region, if the test has been performed properly.

Determines the period that the egg and the sperm cells will meet in the best conditions.

Ovulation may be irregular because of circumstances, emotions, and other factors in your life. You cannot presume that ovulation always occurs at the same time after menstruation. Therefore, you should test again in each menstrual cycle.

  1. One pouch containing a cassette, a pipette and desiccant. The desiccant is for storage purposes only, and is not used in the test procedures.

  1. A clean, dry, plastic or glass container to collect the urine.
  2. Timer (watch or clock)

  1. This kit is for external use only.
  2. Discard after first use. The test cannot be used more than once.

  1. Store at 4°C to 25°C in the sealed pouch.
  2. Keep away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat.
  4. Preferably open the pouch only shortly before the test.

Any urine specimen is appropriate for Ovulation Testing. But morning urine is better.

Urine specimens may be collected in any clean, dry, plastic or glass container.

The length of the menstrual cycle is the duration from your first menstrual bleeding day to the day before the next bleeding begins.
Determine the length of the menstrual cycle before the test. If your cycle is shorter than 21 days or longer than 38 days, consult a physician. If you do not know your cycle length, you may begin the test 11 days after your first period since the average cycle length is 28 days. Perform 1 test each day over a 5 days period, or until the LH surge has been detected.

Example: If your cycle is normally twenty-six days, the Cycle Chart indicates testing should begin on day 10. The following calendar shows how to determine day 10.

Test cassette and specimens should be brought to room temperature(20-30℃) prior to testing.

  1. Draw a urine sample to the line marked on the pipette(approximately 0.2ml).
  2. Dispense the specimen into the sample well.
  3. Wait for 1 to 5 minutes and read the results.

No LH Surge: Only one color band appears on the control region, or the test band appears but is lighter than the control band. This means there is no LH surge.

LH Surge: If two color bands are visible, and the test band is equal to or darker than the control band, one will probably ovulate in the next 24-48 hours. If trying to get pregnant, the best time to have intercourse is after 24 but before 48 hours.

Invalid: No visible band at all. Repeat with a new test kit. If the test still fails, please contact the distributor or the store where you bought the product, with the lot number.

  1. The test works only when the test procedures are precisely followed.
  2. This test may not be used as a form of birth control.
  3. Consult a doctor if irregular or unusually long cycles are experienced.

No. Variations in the color of the control band will not affect the test result. It is only effective to compare the color of the test band to that of the control band of the same device on the day the test is perform

No. Test results must be read at 5 minutes. Though a positive result should not change for several days, a negative result may change to a false positive within minutes after the end of the testing period, which would not be an accurate reading. It is always best to read the results at the 5 minute testing period and then discard the test to avoid confusion.

At least 5 days or until the LH surge has been detected. Once the test is positive, please stop testing in that cycle.

No. Each urine sample will vary in its chemical makeup, as will the humidity of the air in the testing chamber (room). Such variations in physical conditions can cause the vertical streaking and/or the pink-rose background color but will not affect the test results. As long as the control band appears within five minutes, the test is working properly.

No, but you should consult your physician if you are taking any medication.

Once the test is positive, this means your fertile time has started because ovulation is likely to occur within the next 24-48 hours. Have sex ( as often as you like) within this time frame.

The rise in basal body temperature primarily indicates that ovulation has already occurred - after which you are no longer fertile! The OPK test indicates that ovulation is about to occur and is much more useful if you need to plan baby-making sex!

Many factors can affect your ability to become pregnant. Often you may need to use the test kit for 3-4 months. You should consult your physician if pregnancy is not achieved after 3-4 months. Or you can ask Dr. Malpani for a free second opinion!
